green roof information

A green roof can also be referred to as a grass roof, living roof, roof garden or sedum roof, and is a vegetation layer covering a roof structure that offers a number of significant structural, environmental and social benefits. A green roof is usually referred to as either 'extensive' or 'intensive', extensive requiring little irrigation, an intensive roof uses an irrigation system which adds considerable complexity but gives increased planting options.

Seeding and Planting

Rofa® Boards can be seeded or planted using various plant varieties, including sedum, wildflower, chamomile and herbs. The term 'green roof' can be slightly misleading as it suggests the end result is only available in one colour - green. This could not be further from the truth. Whilst it is fair to say that the vast majority of projects use a green coloured vegetation layer, as you can see from the images below there is a rainbow of colours available to pick from. In fact there are around 400 hundred varieties of sedum or stonecrop available in the northern hemisphere alone! Sedum is very popular as it has excellent green roofing properties that include:

  • Hardiness
  • Bird resistance
  • Low maintenance
  • Self generation
  • Immediate results
  • Lower roof weight
  • Drought resistance

Wildflowers offer a colourful addition to an intensive green roof, they are available in a booster mix that encourages all year growing and flowering. Chamomile and herbs are hardy and provide excellent root coverage for your green roof.
